Signs You May Have a Hormone Imbalance

Could Your Symptoms Be Related to a Hormone Imbalance?

Hormones are powerful chemical messengers that regulate nearly every function in your body — from your energy levels and metabolism to your mood, sleep, and libido. When they're in balance, you feel good. When they're not, the effects can be wide-ranging and sometimes difficult to pin down.

At Slender Me Medical, we see patients regularly who have been struggling with symptoms for months or even years without a clear explanation. In many cases, a hormone imbalance is at the root of it. Here are some of the most common signs to watch for.

Common Signs of Hormone Imbalance in Women

Hormone levels naturally fluctuate throughout a woman's life — during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. But when hormones fall out of their optimal range, even outside of these transitions, symptoms can become disruptive.

  • Hot flashes and night sweats — one of the most recognized signs of declining estrogen
  • Fatigue and low energy — even after adequate sleep
  • Mood changes — including increased anxiety, irritability, or low mood
  • Brain fog — difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or mental cloudiness
  • Low libido — decreased interest in sex or difficulty with arousal
  • Weight changes — especially unexplained weight gain around the midsection
  • Sleep disturbances — difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Irregular periods — changes in cycle length, flow, or frequency

Common Signs of Hormone Imbalance in Men

Testosterone levels in men naturally decline with age — typically beginning in the 30s and continuing gradually over time. But low testosterone (and other hormonal imbalances) can cause symptoms that significantly affect quality of life.

  • Fatigue and low energy — persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest
  • Low libido — decreased sex drive or difficulty with sexual performance
  • Mood changes — irritability, low mood, or lack of motivation
  • Brain fog — difficulty with focus and mental clarity
  • Loss of muscle mass — even with regular exercise
  • Increased body fat — especially around the abdomen
  • Sleep problems — including difficulty sleeping or increased fatigue during the day
  • Reduced bone density

What Causes Hormone Imbalances?

Hormone imbalances can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, chronic stress, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. In many cases, it's a combination of factors — which is why a thorough clinical evaluation is so important.

How Are Hormone Imbalances Diagnosed?

At Slender Me Medical, our licensed nurse practitioner evaluates hormone imbalances through a combination of a comprehensive health history review and lab work. Lab work allows us to measure your actual hormone levels and identify where imbalances may exist. If lab work is required, it will be billed separately.

What Are My Treatment Options?

If a hormone imbalance is identified, our provider will discuss treatment options with you during your consultation. One approach we specialize in is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which uses hormones that are chemically identical to those your body produces naturally. BHRT is available in various forms including creams, injections, and pellets, depending on what's most appropriate for your individual needs.

BHRT is not appropriate for everyone. Your provider will determine whether it's right for you based on your health history, symptoms, and lab results.

Take the First Step

If you recognize these symptoms in yourself, it may be time to have your hormones evaluated. A consultation with our licensed nurse practitioner is the first step toward understanding what's going on and exploring your options.
